Kathy Townsend
iam: a Gyotaku artist
As a marine scientist, my art, "Island Gyotaku," merges my passion for ocean conservation with the ancient Gyotaku technique. Inspired by Japanese fishermen and European scientists, I create unique impressions of marine species on shoji paper.
Collaborating with local fishermen and researchers, each print is a record of a species, date, and location. Importantly, no life is taken solely for art; each fish is either caught for food or printed post-study.
My art commemorates each marine life, underscoring the importance of sustainable practices.
