Kaitlyn Townsend
iam: a clay and watercolour artist
As an artist, I am perpetually captivated by the vastness of the ocean and the intricate beauty of the natural world. My childhood in Goompie (Dunwich), Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island), was enveloped by the serene whispers of the sea and the untamed elegance of the land. It is this profound connection with nature that breathes life into my art.
Working with clay and watercolours, I strive to capture the essence of the ocean’s depth and the earth’s vibrant textures. The malleable nature of clay allows me to sculpt forms that are both organic and expressive, reminiscent of the island’s rugged coastlines and gentle dunes. In contrast, the fluidity of watercolours enables me to convey the delicate gradations of light and colour that dance across the water’s surface and the island’s lush foliage.
Each piece I create is a homage to Goompie, a place where the land and sea converge in a symphony of shapes and shades. Through my art, I invite viewers to immerse themselves in the tranquility and wonder that have been my lifelong muses. My hope is that my work not only reflects the beauty of Minjerribah but also evokes a sense of joy that resonates with the soul.
