Straddie Brewing Co

SIX ARTISTS  |  SIX SPECIES  |  SIX ORIGINAL DESIGNS

As part of National Science Week 2024, Straddie Brewing Co partnered with 6 local artists to highlight threatened species in our backyard, Moreton Bay. Moreton Bay is a globally significant seascape with outstanding natural assets. Over 1,000 native animal species, many threatened, live in the region or rely on its diverse habitats during migration. Living on the doorstep of one of Australia’s fastest-growing population centres, many of these species face numerous threats and need our help.

The brewery’s Special Release Hazy Pale Ale features beautiful original artworks from six different local artists, each representing one of the threatened species. Customers can scan the QR codes on the cans to learn more about each species, in addition to the work being done to better understand some of Moreton Bay’s most vulnerable species, the pressures on their survival, and what must be done to protect them. Straddie Brewing Co will donate $10 from each carton sold to help important conservation research. The original artworks will be on display, amongst the brewery tanks, for the duration of the Arts Trail.  Free entry.

Indo-Pacific Leopard Shark by Zoe Wolfe @zw.doodles

Zoe is an emerging illustrator with a background in graphic design and environment and sustainability. A love of nature shapes her drawings, in particular Minjerribah’s / North Stradbroke Island's unique and diverse ecosystems. An Island artist, she draws with levity and a tendency towards obsessive patterning that stems from years of doodling during lectures.

Copepods by Gabriel D’Hage-Craig @gabezghost
Gabriel has been visiting North Stradbroke Island his whole life and permanently moved to Straddie six years ago, now calling it home. Coming from a family of artists, and with a Bachelor of Fine Art degree, majoring in drawing and printmaking, and a Masters in Interactive Media, Gabriel’s present focus is the digital platform and craft beer can designs. His large-scale mural “Minjerribah Waters” can be viewed at Straddie Brewing Co.

Eastern Curlew by Tamara Armstrong @tamara_armstrong_art
Tamara is an award winning artist based in southeast Queensland. She has been a finalist in some of Australia's most prestigious art award for female painters; the Portia Geach Memorial Award, as well as the 'Salon dès Refusès' aka the alternate Archibald Prize, the Kennedy Prize, the Redland Bay Award and the Brisbane Portrait Prize. Tamara paints to understand her life and cultural heritage as she lives it, blending her innate love for colour and nature with contemporary perspectives of ‘connection’, to create visually bold and uplifting imagery.

Grey Mangrove by Jess Scott @starfishstudio
As a North Stradbroke Island artist, Jess' work is deeply rooted in the natural world, sharing the vibrant rich culture and landscapes of Straddie. Utilizing pen and ink, and usually fabric as the final medium, each pattern tells a story, and each piece is a study of a pattern found in nature.

Oyster Reefs Tania Budd @taniabudd.art.life
Tania is a visual artist and maker, based on North Stradbroke Island. Having studied clothing and textile design, and other various art modalities at the Brisbane Institute of Art, she values when the process of making art is as organic as nature itself by painting, making marks directly on the canvas laid upon on the earth, or weaving and stitching with natural found fibres from site.

White’s Seahorse by Jarad Danby @_danby
Jarad is a large-scale muralist, contemporary realistic oil painter, and illustrator from the Redlands. He has been painting murals full time since 2019, and completes most of his work in regional towns throughout QLD, NSW & Tasmania.
